What makes Kurjey Lhakhang a special place to visit?

The history of Kurjey Lhakhang’s building is fascinating. The famed tantric Guru Padmasambhava, who introduced Buddhism to Bhutan, was invited by one of Sindhu Raja’s attendants when the king of the iron castle of Bumthang fell ill in the eighth century. Guru Padmasambhava used his supernatural healing abilities to treat Sindhu Raja.

Guru Rinpoche learned that the King’s illness was a result of the powerful Shelging Karpo and other local deities. The chief deity of Bumthang, Shelging Karpo, is supposed to have taken vengeance on the King after his son’s murder by turning the sky black and taking his life power, which brought the King dangerously close to death.

Guru Rinpoche pursued the gods into a cave and meditated there for three months after discovering the illness’s root cause. After conquering the gods, including the formidable Shelging Karpo, Guru Rinpoche left his body imprint inside the cave, giving it the name Kurjey. kur (body),jey(imprint)

Visitors can witness a tall cypress tree next to the monastery that is thought to have grown from Guru Rinpoche’s walking staff and was planted to signify Shelging Karpo’s acceptance of the role of the guardian deity of Buddhism. The three buildings that make up Kurjey Lhakhang are visible to visitors when they are there.
